"Bob Cringely Has Died" — Hacker News (best) · Society

What it means

A Hacker News post reports that (the pen name of technology journalist and documentarian Mark Stephens) has died. The claim is based on an anonymous comment from someone purporting to be a friend of the family, and no official obituary or primary source has been cited. Cringely was best known for his PBS documentary 'Triumph of the Nerds' about the rise of the personal computer and for his long-running InfoWorld column.

Accuracy & sourcesHeadline only

The claim is unverified and rests solely on an anonymous Hacker News comment attributed to a friend of the family. No primary source (e.g., family statement, official obituary, or reputable news outlet) has been cited. Cringely has been the subject of death hoaxes before, including a 2020 blog post titled 'Not dead yet!', and a more recent post from May 2026 does not mention his death, so the solidity of this report is very low.

How new

The Hacker News post appeared about 16 hours ago, making this a genuinely new report (as of October 2026) with no indication of recirculation of older material.
